Abstract Nenets reindeer pastoralists of Yamal in the Russian Arctic, successfully deal with rapidly changing climate and natural gas industrialization. We present results from our long-term ethnographic study (2001–present) on the adaptive strategies that Nenets nomadic households have employed over time, their tradeoffs, inherent risks, and social implications of these strategies. While some strategies limit the adaptive flexibility of herding, they simultaneously enable agency that keeps Nenets households on the land—critical for maintaining their nomadism. Rapid climate change in the Arctic, which could lead to increased icing of pastures, makes reindeer herding more vulnerable. We examine meteorological data from Yamal to better understand the climatic trends challenging reindeer nomadism. Nenets reindeer pastoralists on the Yamal Peninsula of the Russian Arctic have demonstrated success in dealing with rapidly changing climatic conditions and the growing built environment associated with the natural gas industry. We pair our observations of a set of 28 Nenets households with hydrometeorological data to better understand the challenges of reindeer nomadism in this time of unprecedented change. We assembled a data set based on our ethnographic work with reindeer herding households beginning in 2001 through 2022, following 28 households at irregular intervals. The source of these data include surveys, participant observation, and digital communication. For this analysis we extracted information and coded variables for: reindeer herd size, migration distances, locations of summer and winter camps, annual frequency of camp movement, changes in migration patterns, and reasons for choice of migration route. These data were combined with relevant weather parameters derived from the ERA5 reanalysis data product for the immediate areas (30 kilometer (km) grid) surrounding summer and winter camps. We conducted a Bayesian logistic regression using the brms package in R Statistical Software (v4.1.2) analyzing factors contributing to ‘change’ or ‘no change’ in migration routes. Five ERA5 climate variables representing summer heating and winter warming and rain on snow (ROS) events were z-score normalized. Year of observation was treated as a factor. Posterior distribution of climate variables showed no discernable effects on household migration decisions.more » « less

Numerous efficient semiconductors suffer from instability in aqueous electrolytes. Strategies utilizing protective coatings have thus been developed to protect these photoabsorbers against corrosion while synergistically improving charge separation and reaction kinetics. Recently, various photoelectrochemical (PEC) protective coatings have been reported with suitable electronic properties to ensure low charge transport loss and reveal the fundamental photoabsorber efficiency. However, protocols for studying the critical figures of merit for protective coatings have yet to be established. For this reason, we propose four criteria for evaluating the performance of a protective coating for PEC water-splitting: stability, conductivity, optical transparency, and energetic matching. We then propose a flow chart that summarizes the recommended testing protocols for quantifying these four performance metrics. In particular, we lay out the stepwise testing protocols to evaluate the energetics matching at a semiconductor/coating/(catalyst)/liquid interface. Finally, we provide an outlook for the future benchmarking needs for coatings.more » « less

One key objective in electrocatalysis is to design selective catalysts, particularly in cases where the desired products require thermodynamically unfavorable pathways. Electrochemical synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) via the two-electron water oxidation reaction (2e − WOR) requires a +0.54 V higher potential than four-electron O 2 evolution. So far, best-performing electrocatalysts require considerable overpotentials before reaching peak faradaic efficiency. We present Mn-alloyed TiO 2 coatings prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and annealing as a stable and selective electrocatalyst for 2e − WOR. Faradaic efficiency of >90% at < 150 mV overpotentials was achieved for H 2 O 2 production, accumulating 2.97 mM H 2 O 2 after 8 hours. Nanoscale mixing of Mn 2 O 3 and TiO 2 resulted in a partially filled, highly conductive Mn 3+ intermediate band (IB) within the TiO 2 mid-gap to transport charge across the (Ti,Mn)O x coating. This IB energetically matched that of H 2 O 2 -producing surface intermediates, turning a wide bandgap oxide into a selective electrocatalyst capable of operating in the dark. However, the high selectivity is limited to the low overpotential regime, which limits the system to low current densities and requires further research into increasing turn-over frequency per active site.more » « less

The problem of minimizing the rank of a symmetric positive semidefinite matrix subject to constraints can be cast equivalently as a semidefinite program with complementarity constraints (SDCMPCC). The formulation requires two positive semidefinite matrices to be complementary. This is a continuous and nonconvex reformulation of the rank minimization problem. We investigate calmness of locally optimal solutions to the SDCMPCC formulation and hence show that any locally optimal solution is a KKT point. We develop a penalty formulation of the problem. We present calmness results for locally optimal solutions to the penalty formulation. We also develop a proximal alternating linearized minimization (PALM) scheme for the penalty formulation, and investigate the incorporation of a momentum term into the algorithm.
